Contemplating Divorce

No one getting married thinks they will ever desire a divorce. We all hope for a love that is fulfilling, caring, and kind. We imagine a partnership that will be strong and resilient. We hope to have a spouse for life.

Over time, the relationship we fantasized about may prove to be less than optimal in reality. Many factors can weaken a marriage: infidelity, inability to truly communicate, a feeling of insufficient emotional support, substance abuse, financial disagreements, differences in parenting approaches, or overt family interference. The list goes on.

Contemplating divorce can bring anxiety, fear, ambivalence, and confusion. It is a big step, but often one that makes sense in a particular situation. However, couples therapy may help prevent the need to separate or dissolve the marriage. Solutions may be found that preserve the union.

Every circumstance is different. Your marriage is unique, with its own special history, subtle nuances, and mutual expectations. Therapy can greatly assist in helping you think through alternatives, options, and next steps when your relationship is faltering.

Morris Guild of Psychotherapy therapists have long-term expertise and experience in helping individuals and couples. We're here to support you—step by step—as you navigate relationship challenges. Please reach out to our practice. You don’t have to go through this alone.
